We have some big news to share today. Thanks to you and thousands of other Physicians Committee supporters, the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson has stopped killing pigs to train surgeons!
We launched this campaign back in January 2021 by filing a federal complaint. Then we held a physician-led demonstration, coordinated various advertising campaigns, and sent a letter from 163 physicians to Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Board of Regents. And 47,901 of you sent petitions to leaders at U of A!
Then, just days ago, U of A confirmed that it has replaced animals! Surgery residents will no longer cut into live pigs and remove their organs as part of their training. Instead, they will practice procedures using human-relevant methods, such as medical simulators and cadavers.
The university now joins 222 other medical centers across the U.S. and Canada—including Stanford, Yale, the Mayo Clinic, and even U of A’s program in Phoenix—that have replaced animals in surgery training.
Let’s keep the momentum going! Please join us in urging the Medical College of Wisconsin to follow suit and replace animals in its deadly training laboratories.
Thank you for making this victory possible, and for all you do to support our efforts.
